Disability Day of Mourning, Krip-Hop Nation Event, Job Openings at Access Living

Disability Day of Mourning 2022:

At 6 pm Central today, join the Chicagoland Disabled People of Color Coalition (DPOCC) as they host Chicago’s Disability Day of Mourning event via Zoom.

Each year on March 1, the disability community comes together to remember the victims of filicide-people with disabilities killed by their caregivers, usually parents. Far too often, society excuses the murders and erases the story of the disabled person. On the Disability Day of Mourning, we remember those we lost, and strengthen our resolve to continue fighting for our community. The event is also supported by the UIC Institute on Disability and Human Development, UIC Disability Cultural Center, and Autistic Self Advocacy Network. You can also check out the vigil sites across the country here.

This Weekend: Krip-Hop Nation Performance and Conversation

This weekend, join Krip-Hop Nation’s Leroy Moore, Keith Jones, Toni Hickman, DJ Quad, and Wheelchair Sports Camp for an online event celebrating disability justice performance. The event is from 3-4:30 pm Central time on Saturday March 5, and is free. Register at this link. You will not want to miss this lineup!

CODA Film Wins SAG Awards

Also in disability/Deaf arts news, this past weekend the ensemble cast of the film CODA, as well as actor Troy Kotsur in a supporting role, won awards at the Screen Actors Guild ceremony. This is a big deal for Deaf actors; the film centers on a Deaf father and his hearing daughter, who is a Child of a Deaf Adult (CODA). The film is available on AppleTV+.
