Urgent Action Needed for Illinois Housing Bill (HB 2775)

Access Living friends and allies,

We’d like to share an urgent Illinois action alert on HB 2775. HB 2775 will make source of income discrimination illegal in Illinois. If this bill passes, a landlord cannot discriminate against a tenant solely because they receive Social Security, Alimony, Child Support, or Housing Choice Vouchers. The bill passed the House in April 2021, and we are very close to it passing in the Senate. We’d like to share the below action alert alert from our friends at the Chicago Area Fair Housing Alliance (CAFHA):

In the last few days, the Illinois Coalition for Fair Housing has been working incredibly hard to pass HB 2775 before the end of the General Assembly session on April 8.

A major update to share is that HB 2775 has been amended and assigned to the JUDICIARY Committee. We are now at a crucial step in the process and we need to make sure that members of the Judiciary Committee hear from supporters like you by the end of today, March 22nd. Your actions will help ensure that HB 2775 passes out of committee by March 25th.

For several decades, advocates have been working to expand source of income protections. Take one of the actions below and help make source of income protections a reality in Illinois.

TODAY’S DAY OF ACTION

There are many actions you can take to level up on your support for the campaign. The phone banking effort is most urgent and one we have targeted to be completed by the end of day today.

1. JOIN THE PHONE BANKING EFFORT

It’s amazing what a quick, old-fashioned phone call to your Elected Official can do for a bill. Join the phone banking effort by committing to making 3 phone calls and to reporting back to pfron@cafha.net with notes on how your calls went. Click here to view the list of Senators and suggested scripts.

2. TAKE A QUICK MINUTE TO SEND AN EMAIL

The Illinois Coalition for Fair Housing has set up an easy action alert link that anyone can click on to send an email to Illinois Legislators urging them to support for HB 2775.

3. AMPLIFY SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

The Coalition has been leading a social media awareness campaign about HB 2775. However, these efforts are only as good as their amplification, and that means having HB 2775 content make as much noise as possible in the social space! You can help by continuously sharing our content across all your social media channels. It’s so important to comment on your own reasons for supporting HB 2775 and why this bill is important to you and/or your constituents. Click on any of the following links to view campaign posts: Twitter  Facebook  LinkedIn Instagram
