Need Valentine’s Day plans? Our newest economic justice community organizing group, People Over Profit (POP), will host a two-day event called “Love Without Limits: A Valentines Celebration of Disabled Empowerment.” POP hopes to bring attention to the financial barriers that disabled people have in getting married and forming relationships. We will have special guests! Ever heard of the documentary “Patrice”?
Did you know… When someone is a recipient of SSI they risk losing their benefits if they decide to get married, or if they choose to live with a longtime partner. POP envisions a world where relationships are not barriers and accessible to everyone. In order to build a new marriage equality movement, we need your support.
What’s on February 13th? On Thursday, February 13th from 1pm-5:30pm Central time, POP will convene a panel of disability activists and organizers to discuss how SSI benefits are impacted by marriage. Following our panel conversation, we will have a screening of “Patrice: The Movie,” a documentary that showcases the fight for disabled people to get married. After the film we will have a talkback with the film’s stars Patrice Jetter & Garry Wickham. Please register here for February 13 or by emailing Larry Dean at ldean@accessliving.org.
What’s on February 14th? POP will host an in-person Valentine’s Disability Prom from 4pm-7:00 pm Central for the community. The prom will be at Access Living at 115 W. Chicago Avenue. Come dress up! Come solo or bring a guest (or multiple guests!). We’re going to enjoy music, food, karaoke and more! This event is free. Please register here for February 14 or by emailing Larry Dean at ldean@accessliving.org.
Please share these upcoming events with your friends and community partners. We hope to see you there!
