DeCRIPtion: a storytelling and poetry workshop series is designed by and with disability community in mind. DeCRIPtion workshops are open to those with and without disabilities. Each workshop is taught once in-person and once virtually. The first date of each month is in-person. The second date listed is virtual. All workshops occur from 6:30-8:30pm Central.

About the Workshop Facilitator
Joy Young is an impact storyteller, performance poet, scholar, educator, and curriculum development expert with years of experience focused on centering and amplifying marginal voices in the literary and performance arts. Joy’s work, which been featured on Button Poetry, Everyday Feminism, SlamFind, and on stages, in classrooms and community spaces across the country, is underscored by the belief that our personal narratives can be a driving force for making substantive change—for creating spaces of human connection, healing, and justice.

This series of event is brought to you by the Arts and Culture Project at Access Living, the Disability Culture Activism Lab (DCAL), Art Collective at School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Shirley Ryan Abilities Lab. As a platform for creative disability art and advocacy projects, DCAL uses a peer support and collective care model in which disability community members from Access Living and art therapy graduate students collaborate as disability culture makers for social change. Bodies of Work is a part of the Department of Disability and Human Development within the College of Applied Health Sciences at University of Illinois-Chicago.
